As a resident of the cold, snowy Midwest, I’ve always seen peonies as a harbinger of spring. When their big, showy, pale pink heads pop up at the grocery store, I know that warmth, sunshine, and joy are just around the corner, no matter what the wind chill may be. “A peony fragrance is special because peonies are one of the most beloved flowers in the world with a lot of symbolism. “Peony sits in this interesting middle ground in the floral world,” Fulton & Roark cofounder Kevin Keller recently told Allure. “Where rose can feel formal and heavy, and jasmine can feel heady, peony reads as fresh, green, and almost fruity.” Jeniece Trizzino, vice president of innovation and product for Scentbird, agrees: “There is a growing interest in fragrances that still have personality but feel fresher, more transparent, and easier to incorporate into everyday life. Peony also works particularly well with the current interest in layering and more personalized fragrance routines because it blends so easily with other notes.”
Peony certainly does play well with others, blending beautifully with its fellow florals and bringing a featherlight sweetness to fruity notes and darker ones too. And Cote-Mouzzanar says it can be paired with “nearly anything” under the fragrance rainbow: “Many times in life, and in perfumery, nature is our guide, our teacher, and a perfumer, so we tend to lean into that a lot,” she says. “We can also get really experimental with it and do trials of darker fruits or woods to play with it.”
