If hairstylists had to crown one universally flattering haircut for allover fine or thin hair, the blunt bob would probably take the title. “A blunt bob is a one-length haircut with clean, sharp ends,” says hairstylist Kee Taylor, who splits her time between Philadelphia and Los Angeles. “The lack of layers creates a strong, solid perimeter.”

She recommends asking your stylist for “a blunt, one-length bob with minimal layering” and mentioning that you’d like to preserve as much density through the ends as possible. Those details matter because every snip of unnecessary layering removes hair from the very place you’re trying to make look fuller.

Hannam agrees that restraint is key. While a stylist might customize the cut with subtle face-framing or a touch of texturizing, “generally speaking, it’s all about having everything be one length so that bottom line is as thick as possible,” he says.

That strong line is exactly why the haircut works so well. Thin hair naturally loses density toward the ends, Taylor says, which is why longer styles can sometimes look wispy no matter how healthy the hair is. Amerah Underwood, hairstylist and cofounder of UMI Salon in New York City, explains that layers on uniformly fine hair remove weight exactly where it can least afford to lose it. Instead, a blunt bob “stacks all the hair at the same endpoint, so the ends look thick, dense, and healthy instead of wispy or see-through.”

Its simplicity is another major advantage. Underwood notes that “the blunt line accomplishes most of the styling work because it’s the style in and of itself.” On naturally straight hair, wear it sleek to emphasize the crisp line. Loose, brushed-out waves can add movement while preserving the blunt shape, and a lightweight texturizing spray like BLVD & Co Texture Sea Salt Texture Spray at the roots adds lift without compromising the fullness at the ends. We also love Unite Texturiza Spray for its matte finish and medium hold.
